Has Sears discovered how to profit from its softer side?

Some may remember when apparel was considered a strength of Sears’ business. Whenever that was, it was some time ago. That’s what makes the news that Sears is debuting a new shop-within-a-shop clothing concept in five stores in New York’s Westchester County and Northern New Jersey as an anomaly. The “Showcase at Sears” concept has been billed at giving the retailer’s customers “an exclusive opportunity” to shop the lines of 10 European and Latin American clothing brands – most…

Sears Hometown store coming to Franklin

Sears announced Wednesday it would open a branch of its Sears Hometown store in Franklin. To find out more about Facebook commenting please read the Conversation Guidelines and FAQs A Sears Hometown storefront. Sears Hometown will open a location in Franklin in October. (Photo: Submitted) The store will be located at 1415 Liberty Pike and is scheduled to open in mid-October at the former Walgreens location. Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores, Inc. has 1,150 stores across the country and specializes in selling appliance brands such as Kenmore, Maytag, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Samsung, Frigidaire, LG and General Electric. It will also offer lawn equipment and other tools usually found at Sears locations. The location will be owned and operated by new local business owner William Talbot. Talbot relocated to Franklin from Austin, Texas, about a year ago and previously worked in insurance. Talbot said there was an opening for a Sears in the area because of recent closings. “They’ve (Sears Hometown) typically been in very small towns where Sears wasn’t located,” Talbot said Wednesday. “Now that the larger Sears holding is closing some stores, it’s opening the market to the smaller, locally owned stores.” Talbot said he plans to employ four to five part-time workers as well as at least one full-time position. “I’ve always been a big Sears, Craftsman, DieHard guy and I’ve been a loyal Sears customer for years,” Talbot said. “They (Sears) closed the store down here in Franklin a couple years ago which opened the opportunity for private ownership … it opened the opportunity down in Franklin because you can’t have any of the Hometown stores near other Sears.” The company’s previous store that was located in Davidson County at the Bellevue Center closed in August 2015 for a redevelopment project. Another former location in Antioch was eyed by Bridgestone Americas earlier this year. “William has been successful in his previous business ventures and we are excited about the opportunity to partner with him to bring Sears products back into the Franklin and Williamson County area,” said Mike Jones, regional development manager for Sears Hometown Stores, in a news release. “His team will be focused on providing customers with great products, exceptional customer service and a wonderful store experience.”

Kinahan cartel knew of target’s holiday plans before shooting

However, despite this he is not considered a serious criminal and gardaí believe he was targeted solely because he is a member of the Hutch family. Mr O’Neill had been walking with Jonathan Hutch alongside a large group at the time of the shooting, but the two men had only recently met each other. Gardaí believe members of the Kinahan cartel were informed one of their main targets was planning a trip abroad long before the fatal shooting that left an innocent father of three dead. Trevor O’Neill (41) was on a family holiday in Majorca with his partner and three children when he was shot dead in a case of mistaken identity. The tragic incident occurred shortly before 9pm on Wednesday afternoon on the Costa de la Calma. It has emerged that Jonathan Hutch (37) – a nephew of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch – told detectives in the immediate aftermath of the killing that he was the intended target. Gardaí believe that members of the Kinahan cartel received information that Jonathan Hutch intended to travel to the Balearic island long before he actually arrived. Authorities are now examining flight manifests to determine if any known criminals arrived through Palma de Majorca Airport in the days before the fatal shooting. Spanish police are also investigating whether two burnt-out cars were used as getaway vehicles by the killer and his suspected accomplices. Locals said the two vehicles – a Volkswagen Golf and a car thought to be a Seat Ibiza – were set on fire simultaneously shortly after Mr O’Neill was gunned down in front of his partner and three children. Neighbours of the Dublin City Council worker described him as an “absolute gentleman”, with the council’s chief executive officer saying he was a “hard-working” and “dedicated employee”. Locals left floral tributes at the family home of Mr O’Neill, as a Dublin GAA flag was placed on the gate of the Drimnagh home. Mr O’Neill’s devastated partner Suzanne and their three children were flown home from Majorca and arrived home in Dublin shortly before midnight on Thursday. They did not return to their family home in Drimnagh yesterday, and are believed to be staying with close relatives in the capital as they come to terms with the senseless killing. “It’s tragic, he was a lovely man and he was a very good dad … we are heartbroken,” neighbour Meriline Calou said. Jonathan Hutch was on board the same return flight as the O’Neill family. Hutch was escorted through Dublin Airport, with armed gardai guiding him through a private exit, after flight FR9998 touched down. It is believed that he he has since gone to ground amid fears he may be targeted again by the Kinahan cartel. It is also being investigating whether the suspected gunman lay in wait for days before the botched gun attack which resulted in the father’s death on Wednesday night. Liaising with their Spanish counterparts, gardaí are probing whether the gunman hid in the Balearic island or mainland Spain for a number of days, intent on murdering Jonathan Hutch – the older brother of feud murder victim Gareth Hutch. It is believed the killer flew from the UK – where he has been hiding after threats were made against him in Dublin – and made his way to Majorca with the latest feud hit in mind. The heartbroken family of Trevor O’Neill returned to Dublin shortly before midnight on Thursday, with Jonathan Hutch boarding the same plane home. Meanwhile, TDs have called on Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald to inform Spanish authorities that a more robust response is needed to deal with Irish gangs in the southern European country. Fianna Fáil Justice spokesman Jim O’Callaghan said: “It is astonishing that such a large criminal enterprise can be operated openly from Spain without the intervention of the Spanish authorities. The murder of Trevor O’Neill must result in a more aggressive response from the Spanish authorities.” Ryan Nugent Gardai are examining CCTV footage in a bid to identify the people who dug up a grave in Tallaght this week. Philip Ryan Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said police forces cannot prevent every horrific gang murder when “unscrupulous” criminals are determined to kill. Independent.ie Newsdesk A family returned home from their holiday to find their home wrecked and a sinister message scrawled on the wall of a room.

Syria War: Russian Cruise Missiles Target Aleppo From Mediterranean Warships

BEIRUT/MOSCOW — Russian warships in the Mediterranean Sea fired cruise missiles at targets near Aleppo on Friday, a further sign of Moscow’s broadening military effort in Syria days after it began to fly bombing missions from an airbase in Iran. Russian air power had helped Syrian President Bashar Assad make steady advances against rebels seeking to oust him since Moscow’s intervention a year ago, but a recent insurgent advance in Aleppo has checked that momentum. In northeastern Syria, warpl…

A complicated mug of coffee isn’t his cup of tea anymore

I’m thinking about going back to tea. Coffee has gotten too complicated for me. Tea is simple and straightforward. Dip the bag in boiling water, add milk, add sugar, add slurp. I grew up a tea drinker. I didn’t drink coffee until I started working in newspapers. If there was no coffee, there would be no newspapers, at least no daily newspapers. There also would be far fewer people wandering around newsrooms in need of tranquilizer darting. Besides journalism, some other professions …

Tracking Bruce Berkowitz’s Fairholme Portfolio – Q2 2016 Update

Bruce Berkowitz’s US stock portfolio decreased this quarter from $1.66B to $1.45B. Fairholme’s large stake in AIG Warrants was reduced while increasing Bank of America. These two trades are a repeat of last quarter’s activity. The portfolio is very concentrated with the largest three positions accounting for ~73% of the US long assets. This article is part of a series that provides an ongoing analysis of the changes made to Fairholme’s US stock portfolio on a quarterly basis. It is based on Fairholme’s (MUTF:FAIRX) (MUTF:FOCIX) (MUTF:FAAFX) regulatory 13F Form filed on 08/15/2016. Please visit our Tracking Bruce Berkowitz’s Fairholme Fund Holdings article for an idea on how his holdings have progressed over the years and our previous update for the fund’s moves during Q1 2016. Berkowitz’s US stock portfolio decreased 12.32% from $1.66B to $1.45B this quarter. The portfolio continues to be very concentrated with the vast majority invested in just five businesses. The largest three positions are St. Joe Companies, Sears Holdings, and Bank of America and together they account for 73.43% of the 13F portfolio. Berkowitz’s flagship Fairholme Fund has generated significant alpha since its December 1999 inception: thru Q2 2016, the fund’s annual returns are at 10.07% compared to 4.20% for the S&P 500 index. The fund has however underperformed over the most recent 10-year period. Top holdings that are not in the 13F report include Fannie Mae pfds (FNMAS), Freddie Mac pfds (FMCKJ), and Imperial Metals (OTCPK:IPMLF). Fairholme Fund is known to hold significant cash especially when markets are high. The current cash allocation is ~30%. Note: In Fairholme’s semi-annual report, Fannie & Freddie were termed as the best businesses the firm has ever owned. Also, the buy thesis on Imperial Metals was summarized: the Red Chris & Mount Polley mines should allow them to double output while rivaling lowest-cost producers. Also, copper’s potential medical use (ability to kill bacteria) could be an eventual catalyst. Now Inc. (NYSE:DNOW): The 7.26% DNOW stake was purchased in Q3 2015 at prices between $14.80 and $19.74. It was disposed of this quarter at prices between $15.96 and $19.30. The stock currently trades at $20.54. Last two quarters had seen a combined ~10% trimming. Note: Now Inc. is a May 2014 spinoff from National Oilwell Varco (NYSE:NOV). Fairholme’s ownership stake in the business was ~6.5%. Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), WTS 13.30 Strike, and BAC WTS 30.79 Strike: BAC is Berkowitz’s third largest position at 15.66% of the US long portfolio. The stake was first purchased in 2010 and minor adjustments had since been made every quarter. Q1 2015 saw a ~19% reduction in the common and a ~8% increase in the warrants. Q3 2015 saw an almost two-thirds reduction in the common at prices between $15.26 and $18.45. In Q4 2015, the common saw an 86% reduction while the warrants were increased by 21%. The common stake was more than doubled last quarter at prices between $11.16 and $16.83. This quarter saw another ~50% increase in the common stake at prices between $12.18 and $15.11. The warrants stake saw a ~6% trimming. The stock currently trades at $15.17. Note: Fairholme’s semi-annual report talked about this investment: “improving operating efficiencies should more than counter declining net interest margins.” Lands’ End (NASDAQ:LE): The 3.39% LE stake was purchased in Q3 2015 at prices between $21.26 and $28.92 and increased by 63% the following quarter at prices between $21 and $28. The stock is currently at $17.01. Last quarter saw a ~5% trimming while this quarter saw a ~3% increase. . Note: Lands’ End is an April 2014 spinoff from Sears Holding. Berkowitz received ~7.35M shares but that stake was sold out by the end of that year. The current position is ~9% of the business. Sears Canada (NASDAQ:SRSC): The SRSC position was established in Q4 2014 as a result of Fairholme participating in a rights offering from Sears Holdings. They distributed one subscription right for each share of Sears Holdings held and it allowed the purchase of 0.375643 shares of Sears Canada at $9.50 per share. The rights would have resulted in the purchase of around 10M shares but Berkowitz ended up with ~40% more (oversubscription privilege). There have been minor increases since. This quarter saw a ~5% increase. The stock is now at $2.81. Sears Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:SHLD) and Sears WTS 28.41 Strike: Sears is Berkowitz’s second-largest position at 30.22% of the US long portfolio. The original stake was established in 2007 although the position size has fluctuated over the years. Last two years saw consistent buying. The current stock price ($17.79) is far below Fairholme’s cost-basis. The pattern of buying signifies a strong bullish bias. For investors attempting to follow Berkowitz, SHLD is a good option to consider for further research. He controls ~25% of the business. This quarter saw a ~5% increase in the common and a marginal reduction in the warrants. Note: Fairholme’s semi-annual report stated that they believe Sears is starting to unlock value (strategic alternatives for Home Services, Kenmore, Craftsman and Die Hard brands) although it is taking longer than expected. It also mentions Innovel Solutions (previously Sears Logistics Services), a ~1100-truck delivery service as an example of a “hidden” asset. St Joe Companies (NYSE:JOE): JOE is the largest stake at 29.85% of the 13F portfolio. The bulk of the position was purchased in the 2008-2009 timeframe and there have only been minor adjustments since. Currently, it trades at $19.12. Last quarter saw a marginal reduction while this quarter saw a minor increase. Sears Hometown & Outlet Stores (NASDAQ:SHOS): SHOS is a minutely small 0.36% position. It saw a ~89% increase in Q4 2015 but the relative sizing is still very small. There was a marginal increase this quarter. Note 1: Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores is a spinoff from Sears Holdings (mid-October 2012 rights offering). American International Group (NYSE:AIG) WTS 45 Strike: AIG was Berkowitz’s largest position as of Q2 2015 even after a ~78% reduction in the common during the previous seven quarters. Q3 2015 saw the common stake almost sold-out (~96% reduction) at prices between $55.66 and $64.54. Q4 2015 saw another ~63% reduction. The remainder common stake was sold out last quarter. The stock currently trades at $59.31. Last quarter saw a large ~52% further reduction in the warrants. This quarter saw that stake again reduced by ~50%. The remaining position is still fairly large (top five) at 6.85% of the portfolio. Seritage Growth Properties (NYSE:SRG): SRG is a top-five 11.79% position. It was spun-off from Sears Holdings through a Rights Offering in July 2015 and trading started at $37 per share. Fairholme participated and accumulated 3.37M shares (13.5% of the business). Last two quarters had seen marginal increases while this quarter saw a very minor reduction. The stock currently trades at $46.71. Note: Fairholme’s semi-annual report notes the steady progress being made in repurposing, re-tenanting, and redeveloping many of the 266 properties that it purchased from Sears last year – “Redeveloping anchor space comes at a cost to landlords, but holds the promise of hefty returns as department stores paying as little as $2 a square foot in rent are replaced by new anchors paying $15 to $20 a square foot…” Leucadia National (NYSE:LUK): LUK is a very long-term holding that was built-up over several years. The position has seen large reductions since Q2 2013. Q4 2015 saw a ~55% reduction at prices between $16.08 and $21.11 and the remaining stake was almost eliminated last quarter at prices between $14.45 and $17.39. It currently trades at $18.82. Woman puts wedding dress on eBay to pay for her divorce from ‘cheating husband’

A spurned spouse has listed her £2,000 wedding dress on eBay in a bid to pay for the divorce from her ‘cheating husband’. Samantha Wragg, 28, from Chesterfield, wore the ivory ‘art deco’ dress on her wedding day in 2014 but she claims that her groom ‘ran off’ with another woman soon after they tied the knot. The blogger has put the size 6 designer gown up for a starting price of £500 on the auction website with a description taking a swipe at the alleged exploits of her soon-to-be ex husband, who she says left her footing the bill for a divorce. Scroll down for video   Listing the strapless dress as used, she wrote: ‘Great condition but needs dry cleaning before wearing to get rid of the stench of betrayal.’ Continuing her scathing advert, she wrote: ‘Mainly selling as I need to pay for my divorce which my ex-husband has left me to foot the bill for! ‘I’ll also throw in my veil (yes, that’s right – I went all out princess on the day!). ‘Sorry that there are only two pictures but when I found out my husband was living with another woman, I pretty much burned/permanently deleted everything with his disgusting face on it. ‘If you want a dress that is full of bad memories and shattered hopes and dreams then this is the one for you! ‘Hope this dress brings you a lot more happiness than it brought me in the end and if not…well, you can always sell it on here! The dress is strapless, with a long lace train and has been altered to fit Samantha’s petite frame so would be ‘perfect for someone who is 5ft or under with heels and is looking to save some money on a dress’. She continued: ‘There are tiny buttons down the back but these are for decoration as it fastens with a long zip, so quite easy to get into compared to some of the monstrosities of dresses I’ve seen. ‘As it reaches the floor, it is a little dirty around this area and so will need a dry clean before it’s worn for your special day. ‘I didn’t have time to get it dry-cleaned myself before my cheating scumbag of a husband decided to call an end to our marriage.’ In a final dig, she added: ‘If you’ve got any questions – either about the dress or the skank that my husband ran off with – then please feel free to contact me!’ Samantha’s ex partner has been contacted by MailOnline for comment but is yet to respond.
